We've done a lot ...
but there's so much more to be done!
Through the action in October 2011, the gift of dog food in Slovakia, about 100 kilograms of dry food have been left over. I have learned from an animal protection officer in Vienna that there is a shelter for dogs in Slovakia, which are very dependent on donations. In order not to waste any time, I left the next day. My little car was packed with dry food, and I started off with a helper to find this shelter. I only had an inaccurate description of the place. I was to go through Komárno and about two kilometers out of the city where a garbage container would be on the right hand side of the road. That's where the shelter would be located. For financial reasons, there is no advertisement, no board, nothing at all - just the garbage container. And it was true. Shortly thereafter, when we had left the city, there was a garbage container at the edge of the road, and the home for dogs was there, too.
The main person in this home for dogs is Mrs. Agnes. The whole place was her idea. She is there every day, together with a volunteer, mostly a pensioner, who has a lot of time and a big heart for animals. The dog shelter itself looked very clean, but unfortunately also very poor. All the places for dogs were made by hand. What I personally liked very much: In front of each cage hung one or more blankets so that the dogs were covered, should the weather get bitter cold. The place gets almost no donations. When Ms. Agnes asked the city administration for some support, she got the unbeleivable answer: "Just have them put to sleep, and you won't have to care for them any more."
Furthermore, Ms. Agnes has told us that there is a veterinarian who helps her when dogs get sick. He looks after them, and Mrs. Agnes just has to pay for the drugs. There are about fifty dogs in the home. They have a large running area where dogs may run alternately every hour. There is also an infirmary that houses the sick animals. To feed the dogs, they need about 20 kilograms of dry food daily, so my dry food donation from 'Animal Protection concerns us all!' was very welcome indeed. Ms. Agnes was very happy about our donations and said that I should come back soon.
