We've done a lot ...
but there's so much more to be done!
The animal welfare situation in Spain is fundamentally different from that in other Central European countries such as Germany or Austria. In northern Spain there are, for example, excellent animal shelters that comply with a Central European standard. In the south of Spain and on the Spanish islands, however, unclaimed animals are housed in so-called kennels, under desolate conditions and without medical help. The worst part is: If the animals do not find a new owner within six weeks, they are killed or "put to sleep". This scandal is due to the fact that the existing "Animal Welfare Act" is woefully inadequate. This law allows every owner to kill an animal or pet without having to give reasons why he has chosen to do so.
In bullfights, which can only be described as a cruel spectacle, 11,000 bulls are killed annually. In only two of the 17 Spanish provinces the "kiss of death" was given to this bloody drama. In the remaining fifteen provinces, killing the bulls before a jubilant crowd continues unabated. This situation is intolerable and must change. A stop to bullfights is not an easy petition to submit. In many countries, we organize worldwide petitions against the brutal killing of bulls that we submit not only to the Spanish Government but also to fifteen parliaments of the Spanish provinces. In a joint project with journalists "Defensores de animales" we exert public pressure on governments and tourism organizations, with the goal of this cruelty to end definitively. Another objective is to go where the bullfights take place, that is local actions such as protests against bullfighting and confronting the supporters of bullfighting and move them to rethinking their position.
